STREE SHAKTI
The Alumni Association of Modern High School kicked off their diamond jubilee celebration of the school with ‘Stree Shakti’, a unique extravaganza where style met substance through a dazzling kaleidoscope of dance, fashion, music, dramatics and art- all presented by ex-students of the school. The show was co-ordinated by Ms. Oindrilla Dutt, and the imposing stage on the lawn of the school came alive with 2 brilliantly choreographed dance pieces, presented by Ms. Alokananda Roy and Ms. Priti Patel, each supported in their respective presentations by talented and enthusiastic members of the alumni association. These dances were interspersed by fashion shows, with ex-students sashaying down the ramp, to showcase the creations of their fellow-alumni members’ Indian and Indo-Western designs and jewellery. Show stoppers June Maliah and Nilaanjana Chakraborty made brief appearances on the ramp, adding zing to the breath-taking show.
Also on the agenda was a small skit highlighting and saluting the multi-faceted nature of a woman’s persona- the joys and trials of a career woman-cum- homemaker, who exults in the glory of womanhood.
Well chosen and finely rendered group songs in Hindi and English were also sung, to represent the attributes of love, hope, compassion , endurance and other virtues that a woman possesses.
A bouquet of 60 paintings by ex-students on the theme of Flowers was presented to the school on this occasion and these painting today adorn the hallowed halls of our alma mater for students and teachers to view and admire. 2 artists also painted on easels on either side of the stage during the entire duration of the show.
At the end of the show, AMHS president Ms. Kavita Poddar thanked school principal Ms. Kar and other distinguished guest for gracing the occasion before all the participants of the show came on stage and sang the school song.
Refreshments and happy, animated laughter followed as friends and teachers bonded with one another , some after a hiatus of 3 decades or more!
Food, beverages and conversation flowed freely as friends shared plates of mouth-watering ‘chaats’ and childhood memories with joyous abandon and expressed a desire to enjoy many more such occasions in the school premises.

She is an ex-student of Modern HIgh School. She is a cultural icon in Bengal and also made a name globally. She is a highly acclaimed dancer with diplomas, certificates and recognition from a variety of institutions in India and Abroad.
She is presently working with convicts of Presidency Correctional Home,Kolkata and other correctional homes in aWest Bengal through a programme-"DANCE THERAPY"The inmates learn and then perform outside in front of large audiences. This helps them to gain back their self respect, bring out their best and gives them a chance for a better life.
Ms.Roy started by saying that she felt odd to be called a Guest as she is one of the girls of the school who still feels nervous about being pointed out that her socks need to be pulled up.She remembered that one of her teachers had once scolded that "Will you Dance through you life" and there she is actually doing that. She showed us a film on the work that she does in the correctional homes.
The film was called SALVATION THRU DANCE.
Along with other inmates this particularly follows the story of Vicky-a hard core criminal who is now totally transformed with the help of the correctional programme. As of today he is working with Ms.Roy and is one of the most trusted persons in her organizations. It is literally the transformation of a Ratnakar to a Valmiki. The film touched all our hearts and also opened up our mind towards these inmates. We now pray for all of them to get transformed and find a place back in the society.
The meeting came to a close with refreshments and a good bye before the summer vacations.
